More thinking (and talking!) about publishing

A while ago I was invited to work on a publication with the current youth boards affiliated with three arts organisations in Scandinavia: PUBLICS in Helsinki, Index in Stockholm and Praksis in Oslo. As part of the Future Futures: Reaching Out project, which looks at how art institutions connect with wider audiences, and more specifically how they engage and interest young people in the arts, they are collectively working towards a publication. The book will be designed by Tuukka Kaila and published by his imprint Rooftop Press.

The focus is of the project is on the potential of printed matter, publishing and editorial and curatorial practices. Members of each board are thinking together about publishing as an artistic practice, as a means of making public, as a tool for collaborating, as a collective act, as a critical intervention, as a process shaped by conversation and the dynamics of working together – all concerns that have been at the heart of my own curatorial/editorial work. Following an initial meeting with all three boards in late May, I’ve recently had separate meetings with members of each board, during which we had really interesting conversations about power dynamics, agency, how to work together and with others. We’ll continue this pattern of meetings in autumn. Watch this space to see what will unfold…
