Online Summer Course ‘Why Publish?’

Following the short course Publishing, Editing, Writing, which I delivered together with my then colleague Rosie Ram, I’ve been developing a follow-up, a two-week online summer course with my colleague Laura Vallés-Vilchez and which will be convened by Elizabeth Del Prete and will be held in early July.

With the subtitle ‘Publishing as Expanded Curatorial Practice’ and organised around different curatorial motivations – such as documenting and archiving, constructing (new) histories, collaboration and radical collectives, self-organisation and activism – the course will offer an overview of contemporary approaches to curatorial publishing practices in different global contexts.

Confirmed speakers are Ania Dabrowska (artist, UK), Annie Jael Kwan (curator, UK), Abbas Zahedi (artist, UK), Chimurenga (artist collective, South Africa), Lumbung Press’s Erick Beltrán (artist, Spain), Dora García (artist, Norway), Morgan Quaintance (curator/writer, UK), Raqs Media Collective (artists/curators, India), Feral Atlas’s Victoria Baskin Coffey (visual anthropologist/editor, DK), Sarah Ciston (artist/academic/activist, DE) and Zoe Butt (curator, TH). We will also be joined by RCA colleagues Ben Cranfield and Grant Watson. Am very much looking forward to exploring all things publishing from many different perspectives, and hoping participants will enjoy it as much as the previous intensive; several of them were recently in touch because they want to pursue trajectories on which they started then, which is always great to hear.

Image taken during the last documenta in 2022, when lumbung press placed a printing press at the heart of one of the exhibition spaces and new publications were produced ‘live’. Erick Beltrán, who ran the project in Kassel, is continuing with this collective approach in Barcelona, and is also one of the course contributors.
